Supporting Children With SEND
At Madginford Primary School, we believe every child can achieve when they are understood, supported and given the right opportunities.
Our SEND provision is built around our school values and our commitment to providing an inclusive, ambitious education for all children. We focus on identifying and removing barriers to learning, while celebrating each child’s strengths, interests and achievements.
We work in partnership with children, families and professionals to ensure support is personalised, effective and responsive to individual needs.
A Graduated Approach to Support
We use the Assess, Plan, Do, Review approach to make sure children receive the right support at the right time.
Assess
We take time to understand each child’s:
- strengths and interests;
- learning profile;
- communication style;
- social and emotional needs;
- barriers to learning and participation.
Information is gathered through:
- classroom observations;
- assessments;
- discussions with children and families;
- advice from professionals where appropriate.
Plan
We work with children and families to agree:
- achievable outcomes;
- strategies that will help;
- adjustments needed;
- how progress will be measured.
Children’s voices are important. We use approaches such as This Is Me profiles and Pupil Passports to help children share what matters to them and how they learn best.
Do
Support is delivered through everyday classroom practice and targeted approaches, including:
Quality First Teaching
All children benefit from inclusive teaching approaches such as:
- clear explanations and modelling;
- structured routines;
- visual support;
- opportunities to practise and revisit learning;
- adapted resources;
- scaffolding and encouragement.
Targeted Support
Some children may benefit from additional support, such as:
- focused interventions;
- small group activities;
- individualised strategies;
- additional practice of key skills;
- support with communication, learning or wellbeing.
Specialist Support
Where appropriate, we work alongside external professionals, including:
- Speech and Language Therapists;
- Educational Psychologists;
- Occupational Therapists;
- specialist teachers;
- health professionals.
Advice from specialists helps us develop effective strategies and support children’s progress.
Review
We regularly review the impact of support by considering:
- what is working well;
- progress towards outcomes;
- children’s views;
- parent and carer feedback;
- next steps.
Support is adapted as children develop and their needs change.
Supporting the Whole Child
We recognise that children’s learning is closely connected to their wellbeing, relationships and sense of belonging.
We support children to develop:
Confidence and Independence
Through our value of Independence, we encourage children to understand their strengths, express their needs and take increasing responsibility for their learning.
Resilience and Perseverance
Through Perseverance and Challenge, we help children approach difficulties positively, learn from mistakes and recognise their progress.
Positive Relationships
Through Respect and Working Together, we create a supportive environment where children feel safe, understood and valued.
Working in Partnership with Families
Parents and carers are essential partners in supporting children with SEND.
We work together by:
- listening to your knowledge and experiences;
- sharing information regularly;
- involving families in support planning and reviews;
- celebrating children’s achievements;
- working together to overcome barriers.
We believe that the strongest support comes when home and school work together.
Our Commitment
At Madginford Primary School, we have high aspirations for every child.
We believe that inclusion means ensuring every child has the opportunity to participate, succeed and feel a strong sense of belonging.
Every child. Every opportunity. Every success.
