Supporting Your Child's Emotional Wellbeing

Information for Parents and Carers

Children experience a wide range of emotions as they grow. Sometimes children need additional support to understand their feelings, manage worries or cope with situations that feel difficult.

At Madginford Primary School, we want children to feel safe, understood and ready to learn.

What might you notice?

Every child is different, but you may notice:

  • Increased worry or anxiety
  • Tearfulness or changes in mood
  • Difficulty separating from parents or carers
  • Problems sleeping
  • Becoming easily frustrated or overwhelmed
  • Difficulty managing emotions
  • Changes in friendships
  • Avoiding particular activities or situations
  • Increased difficulties with concentration
  • Changes in behaviour

These signs can have many different causes. It is important to look at what may be behind a child's behaviour or emotional response.

How can I help at home?

Listen and talk

Give your child opportunities to talk without feeling that they have to find the perfect words. Let them know that their feelings are important.

Name feelings

Help your child develop the language to describe emotions: worried, cross, disappointed, excited, overwhelmed or nervous.

Keep routines predictable

Consistent routines can help children feel secure, particularly when they are worried about change.

Prepare for changes

Where possible, talk to your child in advance about changes to routines, activities or expectations.

Make time for connection

Simple activities such as reading together, playing, walking or talking at bedtime can provide valuable opportunities to connect.

Encourage regulation

Different children find different things calming. This might include quiet time, movement, breathing exercises, music, drawing or sensory activities.

When should I ask for help?

If worries or emotional difficulties are having a significant impact on your child's everyday life, learning, relationships or wellbeing, please talk to us.

Your child's class teacher or Mrs Farrell, our SENCo, can discuss your concerns and help consider what support may be appropriate.

Remember

You do not have to have all the answers. Asking for support early can help your child develop the skills and confidence they need to manage life's challenges.
