Supporting Every Child’s Transition and Success
At Madginford Primary School, we believe that knowing every child as an individual helps us provide the best possible start to each stage of their education.
A Pupil Passport is a child-centred profile that captures important information about every child, including their strengths, interests, learning preferences and the things that help them feel confident and successful.
Pupil Passports are used for all children to support positive relationships, effective teaching and smooth transitions throughout their time at Madginford.
Why do we use Pupil Passports for all children?
Every child is unique. A Pupil Passport helps adults understand:
- what makes each child special;
- their interests and strengths;
- how they learn best;
- what motivates them;
- how they like to be supported;
- what helps them feel safe, confident and ready to learn.
This approach ensures that children are known as individuals, not just by their academic information.
Supporting Transitions
Transitions are important moments in a child’s education. Moving to a new class, a new teacher or a new phase can feel exciting, but some children may also find change challenging.
Pupil Passports help make transitions successful by ensuring that key information is shared between staff.
They help teachers understand:
- what children enjoy and are confident with;
- how they learn best;
- their friendships and interests;
- any strategies that support them;
- how to help them settle quickly.
This allows children to begin each new year feeling understood and valued.
When are Pupil Passports used?
Pupil Passports support children throughout their school journey, including:
Starting School
Helping staff understand children joining Reception, including their interests, routines, communication and individual needs.
Moving Between Classes
Supporting teachers as children move to a new year group and helping maintain consistency.
Transition Between Key Stages
Helping children move confidently between EYFS, KS1 and KS2.
Moving to Secondary School
Supporting transition to secondary education by sharing important information about strengths, interests, learning approaches and successful strategies.
What Information Might Be Included?
A Pupil Passport may include:
About Me
- My interests;
- My strengths and achievements;
- Things I enjoy;
- Things I would like adults to know about me.
How I Learn Best
- How I like to be taught;
- What helps me concentrate;
- Strategies that support my learning.
My Relationships and Wellbeing
- Important people in my life;
- What helps me feel confident;
- How adults can support me.
My Voice
Children are encouraged to share:
- what they are proud of;
- what helps them;
- their hopes and aspirations.
How are Pupil Passports Created?
Pupil Passports are developed with contributions from:
- children;
- parents and carers;
- teachers;
- other adults who know the child well.
Families provide valuable insight into their child’s personality, interests and needs.
Children’s voices are an important part of the process, helping them develop self-awareness and confidence.
Pupil Passports and SEND
While Pupil Passports are used for all children, they are particularly valuable for children who need additional support.
They help staff to:
- understand individual barriers;
- identify effective strategies;
- make appropriate adjustments;
- support independence and inclusion.
For children receiving SEND support, a Pupil Passport may form part of their wider support plan.
